A day in the life of an apprentice guide at Laluka

Recently, we have welcomed two new student guides at Laluka: Alex and Stephan. They have finished their guiding course at EcoTraining and have chosen to join us for a year.

The goal is to educate them about the hospitality sector with an emphasis on their guiding career, while also allowing them to experience the lodge atmosphere and all its departments.

Here below a small overview of their first week at Laluka.

My unforgettable first week at Laluka.

Reflecting on my first week at Laluka, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement.

From the moment I arrived, I knew I was in for an adventure. The warm welcome, breathtaking surroundings and exceptional team made me feel like part of the family.

DAY ONE: Arrival & Adventure

After a late arrival, Stephan and I were greeted with a warm welcome, given a mission briefing and handed the keys to our trusty vehicle. With a map in hand, we nagivated in the dark, rainy roads to the lodge, nestled within the stunning Welgevonden Game Reserve. Dinner was a delightful introduction to the team: Koenraad, Phillip, Summie & Tiaan.

We spent the evening playing darts, testing each other's knowledge of bird calls and gazing up at the starry sky.

DAY TWO: Laluka Farm & Organic Delights

Our second day took us to Laluka Farm, where we discovered the incredible organic produce grown on-site. We spent the morning picking fresh vegetables, learning about sustainable farming practices and savoring a mouth-watering lunch prepared by Lydia, the talented chef on site.

The afternoon brought even more joy as we met the farm's animals - including an adorable newborn calf!

DAY THREE: Teamwork & Game Drives

The next day, I joined Tiaan on a game drives, witnessing firsthand his impressive people skills, expert driving and insightful wildlife interpretations.

We hosted guests for an early morning coffee and tea service, sharing stories and bonding over the reserve's natural beauty.

Later in the day, we were fortunate enough to spot South Africa's rare, free-roaming wild dog pack - a truly unforgettable moment.

DAY FOUR: Bush Walks, Wildlife Encounters & Starry Nights

As the week unfolded, the adventures continued.

We embarked on bush walks with Koenraad & Phillip, coming face-to-face with white rhinos and leopards. One evening, we helped set up a magical surprise under the stars for the guests - an experiene filled with wonder.

We even quizzed the children on animal tracks, which they absolutely loved, turning a simple bush walk into an exciting mini - adventure.

A home away from home.

Throughout my first week, I've felt embraced by the Laluka Family.

From Didier, Giulia and Simon's warm hospitality to the entire team's kindness, knowledge and humor, I know I'm exactly where I'm mean to be.

Even a small mishap with the "Green Submarine" (ask me about it sometime!) was handled with patience and support.

I'm deeply thankful for the opportunity to be part of this and thank you Laluka for an unforgettable start to this journey.

I can't wait to see what the future holds!
