Getting to Laluka: The Journey into the Waterberg

For most guests, reaching Laluka Safari Lodge begins with a shift away from the familiar.

Flights arrive into Johannesburg, movement continues north, and gradually the surroundings begin to open. The further you travel, the less defined the edges of everyday life become. By the time you approach the Waterberg, space replaces density, and the landscape starts to set the tone.

There are several ways to get to Laluka, each offering a slightly different introduction to the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Arriving by Road from Johannesburg

The most common route to Laluka is by road from O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, with a total travel time of approximately three hours.

The journey begins on the N1 highway heading north, a steady drive of around one hour and forty-five minutes. As the city fades behind you, traffic becomes lighter and the surroundings more open.

Leaving the highway, the route continues along regional roads for roughly one hour and fifteen minutes. Here, the Waterberg landscape becomes more defined — a combination of farmland, open bushveld, and rolling hills that signal your approach to the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Before entering the reserve, guests arrive at Laluka Farm, located just outside the main gate.

This is more than a meeting point. It offers an introduction to the environment that supports the lodge — including the Laluka Farm, where much of the produce used at Laluka Safari Lodge originates.

Ahead of arrival, one of the guides will make contact via WhatsApp — usually 24 to 48 hours in advance — to confirm timing and ensure everything runs smoothly.

From the farm, guests continue into the Welgevonden Game Reserve in an open game viewer. The drive to the lodge takes approximately 30 minutes and often includes the first wildlife sightings of the stay.

Private Transfers

For those who prefer not to drive themselves, private road transfers offer a straightforward and comfortable alternative.

Transfers can be arranged from O.R. Tambo International Airport or anywhere within the surrounding area, including hotels or private residences. Laluka works with a trusted transfer company that caters for a range of group sizes and travel needs.

On arrival at the airport, your driver will be waiting at the exit of the arrivals hall, holding a name board, ensuring a smooth and easily identifiable pickup.

Vehicles are equipped with refreshments, and departure times can be adapted to suit arrival schedules. While transfers are available throughout the day, travelling during daylight hours is generally recommended.

Once booked, the process requires very little involvement. Guests provide their travel details, and we will handle coordination directly, ensuring a seamless connection between arrival point and Laluka Farm.

Transfers can also be arranged after your stay, whether returning to Johannesburg or continuing to another destination within the area surrounding the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Self-Drive

Self-driving remains a popular option, particularly for guests planning a broader journey through South Africa.

Many choose to rent a vehicle at O.R. Tambo International Airport, using it for both their arrival at Laluka and onward travel after their stay.

The route follows the N1 north before turning into the Waterberg. Travelling at your own pace allows for pauses along the way and a more gradual introduction to the region.

Prior to arrival, your guide will be in touch via WhatsApp — usually 24 to 48 hours in advance — to confirm your arrival time, share a location pin for Laluka Farm, and provide the entrance code.

On arrival at Laluka Farm, guests are welcomed with refreshments and can leave their vehicles securely in a covered carport. It also offers a closer look at the operational side of the lodge, including the Laluka Farm, where much of the lodge’s produce originates.

From there, the guide accompanies guests into the Welgevonden Game Reserve for the final drive to Laluka Safari Lodge.

Flying Closer to the Waterberg

For a quicker approach, flights operate directly between Johannesburg and the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Scheduled services run on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with a flight time of approximately 45 minutes . Departures are typically late morning, arriving shortly after midday, with return flights following a similar schedule .

Flights land at the Welgevonden airstrip, where guests are met and transferred by vehicle to their lodge.

Before departure from Johannesburg, passengers are assisted through check-in and have access to the Bidvest lounge. Luggage is limited to 20 kg per person in soft bags, in line with bush flight requirements .

For greater flexibility, private charter flights can be arranged, allowing travel on alternative days and at preferred times within daylight hours. Helicopter transfers are also available, offering a more direct and visually striking arrival into the reserve.

The Final Approach

Regardless of how you arrive, the last part of the journey takes place inside the Welgevonden Game Reserve.

Guests travelling by road or self-drive enter via Laluka Farm, while those arriving by air or helicopter are collected at the reserve’s airstrip. From there, the route continues by open vehicle.

Inside the reserve, distances feel different. Roads narrow, movement slows, and attention shifts outward. Wildlife may appear without warning, and the surroundings begin to define the experience more than the route itself.

For many guests, this is where the stay at Laluka truly begins.

The Journey as Part of the Experience

Reaching Laluka Safari Lodge is not designed to be immediate.

The progression from city to highway, from highway to regional roads, and finally into the Welgevonden Game Reserve creates a gradual change in perspective. By the time guests arrive, the transition has already taken place.

Some choose the independence of driving. Others prefer the ease of a transfer or the efficiency of flying.

Each option leads to the same place — but not in exactly the same way.

And that difference is part of what makes the arrival meaningful.
