Meet Our Guide: Mr X’s First Month at Laluka

My name is Xolani Mhlongo, though most people know me as Mr X. My full Zulu name can be a challenge to pronounce, so the nickname has followed me throughout my guiding career.

I arrived at Laluka Safari Lodge on the 1st of November 2025, and from my very first afternoon, I knew this place was special.

On an introductory drive with Stephan, the reserve immediately impressed me with its rolling hills, open plains, and abundant wildlife. As if to welcome me properly, we saw a cheetah with her young cubs, followed later by a dramatic lion and white rhino encounter.

That evening, lodge owners Simon and Giulia hosted a warm welcome braai. Their kindness, along with the support of the entire team, made settling in effortless.

Within a week, I was guiding my own guests. Many were surprised to hear I was new to Laluka, as sharing knowledge of the bush comes naturally after 14 years of guiding.

That first week even delivered an exciting predator interaction, making it especially memorable for my guests.

What truly sets Laluka apart is its atmosphere.

At night, the lodge becomes beautifully quiet — no music, no engines — only frogs and owls filling the air. It is a peaceful, authentic wilderness experience.

On the 23rd of November, we found a relaxed leopard lying next to the road. In Zulu, a leopard is called ingwe. What stood out most was how every Laluka guide approached the sighting with patience and respect, reflecting the strong ethics shared by the team.

Around the lodge, rock hyraxes are a constant presence, often seen far closer than I’m used to. Elephants regularly visit the waterhole, offering guests incredible viewing from the photographic hide.

Laluka is also home to white rhinos with their horns intact, allowing guests to see these animals as they truly are and better understand the full conservation story. Additional experiences include visiting African wild dogs, exploring Laluka Farm, and discovering the area’s rich cultural history through Bushman rock art.

November has been a wonderful beginning for me at Laluka. When guests leave saying they want to return, it is the greatest compliment we can receive. I’m proud to be part of this team and look forward to sharing many more stories from the bush.
