Plan Your Family Safari at Laluka

A malaria-free Big Five safari for families who want space, comfort, flexibility and time together in the South African bush.

Planning a safari with children can bring a lot of questions. Is it safe? Will the children enjoy it? Do we need a private vehicle? How many nights should we stay? What happens between game drives?

At Laluka, we help you plan the right safari rhythm for your family before you book.

Whether you are travelling with young children, teenagers, grandparents or the whole family together, our small owner-managed lodge offers a calm and personal way to experience the bush.

Is Laluka the right safari lodge for your family?

For first-time safari families

A gentle, personal introduction to safari life, with guides who enjoy answering questions and helping guests understand the bush.

For families with children

A malaria-free setting, flexible hosting and thoughtful planning around your children’s ages, routines and interests.

For multi-generational travel

For families who value privacy

Private vehicle options are available for families who prefer a more flexible safari rhythm.

Laluka is especially well suited to families who want a safari that feels personal rather than crowded, relaxed rather than rigid, and hosted by people who understand that every family travels differently.

This page will help you decide whether Laluka is the right fit for your children’s ages, travel dates, safari expectations and family setup.

Why families feel at ease at Laluka

A family safari should feel exciting, but it should also feel easy.

Parents need clear information, children need space to be curious, and everyone needs a rhythm that allows time to rest between safari activities.

Laluka’s small, owner-managed style allows the experience to feel more personal. Your stay can be shaped around your family’s ages, energy levels and interests, rather than forcing everyone into a fixed safari formula.

1. A malaria-free safari setting

For many parents, a malaria-free safari removes one of the biggest concerns when planning a safari with children. It allows the family to focus on the experience itself: wildlife, nature, food, rest and time together.

2. A small and personal lodge environment

Laluka is intentionally intimate. That means your family is not lost in a large hotel-style environment. The atmosphere is calm, hosted and personal.

3. Flexible safari planning

Families often need a different rhythm. Some children are ready for long wildlife sightings; others need shorter, more varied experiences. Laluka can help guide you toward the best setup for your family.

4. More than game drives

A family stay can include time at the lodge, meals together, a visit to Laluka Farm, and quiet moments where children can connect with nature in a slower and more playful way.

Children on Safari at Laluka

Every family is different, and the best safari setup depends on the ages of your children, the number of rooms booked and the type of experience you would like. When you enquire directly, the Laluka team can guide you toward the safest and most comfortable option.

  • Children are warmly welcomed at Laluka, with safari activities guided by age, safety and reserve regulations.

  • Children under 4 years old can stay free of charge but are not permitted on game drives or safari activities, but babysitting can be arranged at the lodge and a camping cot is available.

  • Children between 4 and 12 years old pay 50% of the rate and may join game drives when one of the following applies: a private vehicle is booked, a minimum of three rooms is booked, or the lodge is booked on an exclusive-use basis.

  • Children above 16 years old can participate in bush walks and sleep-out activities, subject to availability, conditions and guide approval.

  • For children sharing with parents, one or two single beds can be added to the room.

  • Adapted meals for children of all ages

  • When a private vehicle is booked special children safari activities can be organised

Important small-print note

Please confirm your children’s ages when enquiring so that we can recommend the best safari setup for your family.

For many families, a private vehicle is the most comfortable way to safari.

It gives your family more privacy and flexibility. Your guide can adapt the pace of the drive, spend more time on sightings your children enjoy, and shape the experience around your family’s interests.

A private vehicle is especially useful if you are travelling with younger children, grandparents, or a multi-generational group.

It may also be the best choice if you want a quieter and more personal safari rhythm.

Should your family book a private safari vehicle?

A 3-Night Family Safari Itinerary

Every family travels differently, and your stay at Laluka can be shaped around your children’s ages, your energy levels, the season, wildlife movement and the kind of experience you would like to have.

This sample 3-night itinerary gives you an idea of the natural Laluka rhythm: safari, good food, quiet time, family moments and time to properly arrive in the bush.

For families staying longer, we can create a more personalised itinerary with additional Laluka experiences woven into your stay, such as special sundowners, bush dinners, farm visits, farm lunches or dinners, Bushman painting visits, rhino sanctuary visits, wildlife interventions, fly camping, fine dining dinners and wine pairing dinners.

Day 1: Arriving slowly into the bush

Most families arrive at Laluka around 11:30, although arrival times can be flexible depending on your travel plans. There is no need to rush straight into safari mode. First, you arrive, breathe out a little, and let the journey fall away.

After your transfer into the reserve and arrival at the lodge, there is time to settle in and get familiar with your room. The children can explore their new surroundings, parents can unpack, and everyone gets a first feeling for the quiet, open space of Laluka. Lunch is served shortly after, giving your family time to sit down together and ease into the day. After lunch, there is a little pause before the afternoon safari. Some guests return to their rooms for a rest, others spend a quiet moment on the deck, enjoying the view and the feeling of finally being in the bush.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll head out with your guide for your first game drive. This is often when the excitement really begins — the first animal tracks, the first questions from the children, the first wide views across Welgevonden, and that special feeling of not knowing what you may see around the next corner.

When you return to the lodge, there is time to freshen up before joining your hosts at the bar for a drink. It is a relaxed moment to talk about the drive, ask questions, and let the evening settle in. After that, dinner is served — a warm, unhurried end to your first day at Laluka, with the bush just outside and your family already beginning to find its own safari rhythm.

Family moment: Day 1 is about arriving properly. A gentle lunch, time to rest, the first drive into the reserve, a drink with your hosts, and dinner together as the bush becomes part of the family story.

Day 2: Safari, slow moments and dinner under the stars

After a good night’s sleep in the bush, the day starts early — but gently. About 15 minutes before departure, you’ll meet your guide at the bar, where coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits will be waiting. It is a lovely quiet moment before the reserve wakes fully, and before your family heads out on the first morning drive.

The morning safari has its own kind of magic. The air is still cool, the light is soft, and the bush slowly comes alive around you. Your guide will help you notice what is happening along the way — not only the larger animals, but also the tracks, birds, sounds and smaller details that children often become surprisingly good at spotting.

Back at the lodge, breakfast is ready. There will be hot and cold options, and time to sit down properly together after the early start.

After breakfast, the day is yours for a while. Some families choose the spa, others head for the pool, read on the deck, or simply enjoy a quiet moment in their rooms. And if your family is curious to see the bush from a different angle, you can join one of our guides for a bush walk after breakfast. It is a wonderful way to slow down and discover the smaller things that are so often overlooked from a vehicle — tracks, plants, insects, birds and the quiet signs of life all around you.

In the early afternoon, it is time for lunch. This might be served in one of our private spots, or you may choose to gather around the kitchen counter for a show-cooking lunch with our chef. It is relaxed, interactive and a lovely way for the family to learn how some of Laluka’s dishes come together.

Following lunch, there is time to settle again before the afternoon drive. Later in the day, you’ll head back into the reserve with your guide as the light begins to soften and the bush changes pace.

When you return, there is time to freshen up before meeting at the bar for a cocktail or drink of your choice.

Tonight, dinner is something special: a private boma dinner for your family, outside by the fire and under the stars. It is the kind of evening where everyone slows down, the stories from the day come out naturally, and the bush feels very close.

Family moment: Day 2 is about more than safari drives. It is about coffee before sunrise, children noticing small things in the bush, time together between activities, and an evening around the fire that feels completely your own.

Day 3: A deeper day in Welgevonden

By Day 3, your family has settled into the Laluka rhythm. You know your guide, the children are starting to recognise the sounds and signs of the bush, and the reserve begins to feel a little more familiar. This day can follow a similar flow to Day 2, with a morning drive, time at the lodge, lunch, an afternoon drive and a relaxed final dinner. But for families who would like to explore a little further, we can also arrange something special: a longer day drive into other areas of Welgevonden Game Reserve.

A day drive gives your family the chance to see parts of the reserve that are usually too far to reach on a normal morning or afternoon safari. It is a wonderful way to experience the scale and beauty of Welgevonden, from open plains and rocky ridges to hidden valleys, changing vegetation and wide views across the Waterberg landscape.

The rhythm of the day depends on the season.

In summer, your family will usually leave early, often with a breakfast pack to enjoy along the way. You may be out in the reserve from around 06:00 until 13:00 or 14:00, making the most of the cooler morning hours and the early activity in the bush.

In winter, the day often starts a little later. You can enjoy breakfast at the lodge first before leaving around 09:00 with a delicious packed lunch prepared for the drive. You would usually return to the lodge around 15:00 or 16:00.

Whichever version suits your family best, the day drive adds a sense of adventure to your stay. It gives you time to travel further, stop more slowly, enjoy a meal out in the reserve and see Welgevonden from a broader perspective.

When you return to Laluka, there is still time to enjoy the lodge: a swim, a spa treatment, a quiet drink, time on your deck, or simply a last slow afternoon together before dinner.

Your final evening at Laluka is a chance to settle into the memories of the past few days — the sightings, the stories, the shared meals, the small discoveries, and the feeling of having experienced the bush together as a family.

Family moment: Day 3 can be as relaxed or as adventurous as your family would like. Stay close to the Laluka rhythm, or spend the day exploring deeper into Welgevonden with a packed breakfast or lunch and the whole reserve unfolding around you.

Day 4: One last morning in the bush

Your final morning at Laluka begins with one last drive into Welgevonden Game Reserve. By now, the bush feels different from when you first arrived. The landscapes are more familiar, the sounds mean a little more, and your family has its own collection of sightings, stories and favourite moments. This last morning drive is a gentle way to say goodbye to the reserve. There may be one final special sighting, or perhaps it is simply the quiet beauty of the Waterberg, the morning light, the fresh tracks in the road, and the feeling of being together in the bush for a little while longer.

After the drive, you will return to the lodge with time to pack, freshen up and enjoy breakfast. While your family sits down for breakfast, your guides will collect the luggage and prepare for your transfer back to Laluka Farm.

Normal departure from the lodge is around 10:30, although, just like arrival, departure times can be flexible depending on your onward travel plans. Late check-out options may also be possible, subject to availability.

When you arrive back at Laluka Farm, and if time allows, your family can enjoy a farm tour before continuing your journey. This is a lovely way to close the circle of your stay: seeing where some of the ingredients used in your meals were grown and discovering more about the farm that forms such an important part of the Laluka experience.

After that, it is time to continue with your South African adventure. We hope your family leaves with more than photographs — with shared stories, small discoveries, favourite meals, first sightings, quiet moments and long-lasting memories of your time at Laluka.

Family moment: Day 4 is the soft goodbye — one last drive, one last breakfast, a possible visit to the farm, and the feeling that Laluka has become part of your family’s South African story.

Staying Longer at Laluka

A 3-night stay gives your family a beautiful introduction to Laluka and Welgevonden, but a longer stay allows the experience to become even more personal. With extra nights, there is more space to slow down, include special experiences and shape the stay around what your family enjoys most. Some families want more time on safari. Others want more food experiences, private moments, conservation encounters, cultural visits or simply more time to relax between activities.

For longer stays, we can help create a personalised family itinerary that may include:

  • Special sundowners in a beautiful setting in the reserve

  • Bush dinners surrounded by the sounds of the evening bush

  • Farm visits, farm lunches or farm dinners at Laluka Farm

  • Bushman painting visits to connect with the history of the Waterberg

  • Rhino sanctuary visits, where available

  • Wildlife interventions, depending on reserve needs and availability

  • Fly camping for older children or families wanting a deeper wilderness experience

  • Fine dining dinners for a more refined culinary evening

  • Wine pairing dinners for parents or families with older children

These experiences depend on availability, season, weather, children’s ages, reserve conditions and operational planning, but they give families the chance to make their Laluka stay feel truly their own.

Family moment: A longer stay gives your family more than extra nights. It gives you more time to let the bush unfold, to share different kinds of experiences, and to create a safari that feels personal to you.

A safari your children can taste, touch and remember

At Laluka, the family experience continues beyond the game vehicle.

Meals are part of the stay, and Laluka Farm gives families a more grounded connection to the land. Children can begin to understand where food comes from, how the lodge connects to the farm, and how nature supports the experience around them. For parents, this adds something special to the safari. It is not only about seeing wildlife. It is about slowing down and sharing a different way of being together.

Tell us about your children’s dietary needs, preferences or allergies when enquiring, and we will help you understand what is possible.

What is included in your family stay?

For families, we recommend enquiring directly so that we can help you understand the correct room setup, child policy and private vehicle options before you confirm.

Your Laluka stay is designed to feel easy and fully hosted.
